Treasured items become deadly projectiles if not secured by great inventions like Quakehold or clear museum wax/putty during earthquakes. I learned this lesson well through many years in the Bay area of California. A number of my mother's treasured Hummel figurines are now headless or handless.
The people of Myanmar learned their lesson a bit earlier; in the thirteenth century. Tired of losing their Buddha's heads and fingers, they developed a simple solution. Take away the necks on the Buddha's, lengthen the ears so they help support the head and make all the fingers the same size so they can all support the arms.
They're doing much better than my mother's headless Hummels.
