Some situations can be so bad it's hard not to be optimistic. If you're flat on the floor, surely the only way is up? Not in the case of Haiti. The country was doing a good imitation of a punch-drunk fighter – whacked by bad governments, bad hurricanes, bad luck – when an earthquake came along and delivered the knock-out blow.
